Environmental Efforts at Signal Mountain Lodge.


Signal Mountain Lodge recognizes the obligation to our guests, employees, and park visitors, of current and future generations, to operate in a manner that is not only environmentally responsible, but helps set the standard for the lodging industry. Since the 1980's, Signal Mountain Lodge has implemented policies and procedures that address waste reduction, re-use of goods, recycling, environmentally preferable purchasing, integrated pest management, water quality protection, energy, and water conservation and other concerns that affect the resources of Grand Teton National Park and our planet.

Environmental Program History

In 1990, a staff-led initiative to recycle aluminum cans at Signal Mountain Lodge took shape and became the spark that lead to the "greening" of our operations. Our environmental programs, plans, and initiatives have grown in the last 24 years to one of the most complete and comprehensive environmental management systems in the National Parks. We are a leader in the industry, and with the support of our staff, guests, the National Park Service, and Forever Resorts we will continuously strive for improvement and innovation and continue our greening process into the 21st century.

In 2002, Signal Mountain Lodge received the Green Star Award from the Eagle Valley Alliance for Sustainability in Wyoming and also became the first National Park concessionaire and first business west of the Mississippi, to become Green Seal Certified. 2002 also marked the year where we began the process of converting all of our incandescent and old fluorescent lighting with more energy efficient bulbs and fixtures.

2003 was a big year for Signal Mountain Lodge as well. The Lodge became ISO 14001 registered for our environmental management system and received the Department of Interior's Environmental Achievement Award and the National Park Service's Environmental Achievement Award. These are two of the most prestigious awards a concessionaire of the National Park Service is eligible to receive.

Over the years Signal Mountain Lodge has formed many partnerships, achieved multiple green certifications and has garnered a number of awards and much praise for our environmental efforts. The lodge was named as a member of the EPA's Green Power Partnership Leaders Club for offsetting our electrical power usage by purchasing renewable energy credits. All three of the Lodge restaurants (The Peaks, Trapper Grill and Leek's Pizzeria) were the first businesses in Wyoming to achieve certification by the Green Restaurant Association. Signal Mountain Lodge was named a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Restaurant Business Leader by Teton County, Wyoming and we are partners with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

In 2014, Signal Mountain Lodge was featured in the January GreenLine Newsletter published by the Commercial Services division of the National Park Service for our Environmental Commitment, Efforts, and Excellence. The following is an excerpt from the newsletter featuring Signal Mountain Lodge:

"Signal Mountain Lodge in Grand Teton National Park takes great pride in its work and strives to be a leader in environmental stewardship. Management and staff have ingrained sustainability into the culture, and many initiatives are now in place that work towards achieving environmental goals. Through the use of a strong Environmental Management System (EMS), Signal Mountain Lodge is able to bridge the gap between environmental compliance and environmental excellence. The staff at Signal Mountain Lodge take EMS priorities and initiatives beyond the workplace. It is obvious that the goals and targets of operations have moved far beyond day to day work tasks and into the everyday lives of staff at the park. As a result of EMS implementation and integration, quality environmental education on sustainability is reaching the park's visitors and beyond."

All of these accomplishments have not made us complacent. The management and staff of Signal Mountain Lodge are committed to the continuous improvement of our programs, plans, and initiatives, and to continue to be leaders and innovators on the environmental front. Food & Beverage

Our Food & Beverage Sustainability Program at Signal Mountain Lodge is a leader amongst National Park Concessionaires and is continually improving and expanding. We are 3-Star Certified by the Green Restaurant Association and a member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program. Our Food and Beverage operations work with all of our property-wide initiatives as well as some specific to the restaurant outlets. Listed below are some of our initiatives:

  • We use automatic dishwashing detergent, sanitizer, and degreaser that are biodegradable and do not contain NTA or chlorine bleach.
  • All of our to-go packaging and paper products are made from recycled and/or renewable resources.
  • We purchase CSAs for the Peaks Restaurant and staff use from Robinson Family Farm & Ranch in Bedford, WY.
  • We purchase grass-fed whole cows from Robinson Family Farm & Ranch for our staff.
  • All our burgers are from the grass-fed angus ranch HD Dunn & Son in Tetonia, ID.
  • We only purchase seafood approved on the Green List from Seafood Watch.
  • We strive to purchase as locally as possible, and research our carbon footprint for large quantity items.
  • We work to purchase items that are organically or sustainably produced.
  • We use eggs that are cage free, and milk that has not been treated with hormones such as rGBH.
  • Our homemade dough at Leek's Pizzeria is made with organic flours and cage-free eggs.
  • We are ISO 22000 certified.

Lodging & Camping

Signal Mountain Lodge has incorporated many environmentally friendly programs, initiatives, and Best Management Practices into our lodging and campground operations:

  • Programmable timers, light and motion sensors have been implemented for lighting in low traffic areas to ensure that unused lights are not left on or only used when needed.
  • We use water conserving showerheads and faucets in our guest rooms, and waterless urinals have been installed in the campground restrooms and in numerous other public restroom locations. A waterless urinal at Signal saves on average 22,000 gallons per year. With 11 waterless urinals installed it is estimated that Signal saves over 240,000 gallons per year.
  • Signal Mountain Lodge uses environmentally responsible, naturally derived, nontoxic, non-phosphate, biodegradable, concentrated laundry detergents and cleaning products throughout our property. We use bulk soap dispensers in our guest units to help reduce waste from individually wrapped soap and shampoo products.
  • We use latex and low VOC paints and low VOC stains which meet Green Seal GS-33 standards for all painting and staining in our guest rooms and across our properties and we use only non-poisonous insecticides and pesticides for weed and pest control.
  • The paper products used throughout our property are all recycled and meet or exceed the EPA and Green Seal's guidelines for post-consumer content. This includes office materials, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins and facial tissue.
  • Our in-room appliances are energy star rated and we have incorporated LEED certified building aspects and green building practices in guest room remodels and new construction. Beginning in 2014 we started our transition from CFL lighting to more energy efficient LED lighting throughout our guest rooms and operations.
  • Signal Mountain Lodge is also dedicated to minimize guest and employee exposure to hazardous chemicals and cleaning products by using the least toxic materials available on the market. We are continuously searching for the most eco-friendly and non-toxic products on the market to protect not only our employees and guests, but also the environment.


Guest Environmental Participation Program

While staying at Signal Mountain Lodge, our guests have the opportunity to participate in many procedures that will help us with our initiatives to protect the resources of Grand Teton National Park, conserve energy and water, and reduce waste. By signing up for our Guest Environmental Participation Program, guests are pledging to make a difference and will receive a complimentary reusable grocery bag. The following is a list outlining the practices we ask of our guests participating in our sustainable stays program.

In-Room Participation

  • Recycling: Please place all recyclables in the recycling can in your room. A list of recyclable items is located in your room.
  • Occupied Room Heat: Please keep your thermostat set at 68 degrees or below when in your room.
  • Vacant Room Heat: Please keep your thermostat turned down to 60 degrees or below when leaving your room.
  • Lights: Please turn off all lighting when vacating your room.
  • Electronics: Please unplug any personal electronics not in use.
  • Linen Changes: Linens are changed every fourth day or upon request. For longer stays please consider requesting linen changes in longer intervals.
  • Towel Changes: By hanging your towels you are not requesting a towel change and saving water, energy, and chemical use.
  • Water Use: Please consider taking short showers (under 5 minutes) and reduce the time your faucets are running to conserve water.

Property Wide Participation

  • Recycling: Please take advantage of all recycling containers at our facilities for your solid waste.
  • Natural Resource Protection: Please protect our natural resources by walking only on designated trails and preventing air pollution by not idling vehicles.
  • Noise Pollution: Although quiet hours are enforced after 10 PM we ask our guests to be conscious of the noise they create at all hours of the day and night to preserve the natural environment for all visitors.
  • Retail Purchases: Please consider environmentally preferable retail purchases in our General Store and Gift Stores. We offer a variety of organic and environmentally responsible options.
  • Dining Choices: Please consider sustainable food options when dining in our restaurants. The Peaks restaurant offers a menu that is largely generated from sustainable sources. Leek's Pizzeria, Deadman's Bar and Trapper Grill also offer organic and sustainable beverages and foods from local sources.
  • Be "Bear Aware:" Please keep all food items and other attractants inside room or vehicle and not left unattended.

Recycling receptacles are located throughout our property and these items may also be deposited in the blue recycling bin located in each guest room. The following items may be recycled at Signal Mountain Lodge.

Signal Mountain Lodge has had an established recycling program since 1990, and in 2013 we diverted over 85 tons of waste from reaching the landfills through our recycling efforts!


We strive to provide an environmentally friendly or sustainable option for all products sold in our retail locations. Every member of the Signal Mountain Lodge retail staff team is trained and well educated regarding our environmentally friendly retail offerings and are willing to offer advice or inform our customers about the products that we carry.

The Signal Mountain Lodge retail departments offer hundreds of products that are made from recycled, all natural, organic, or locally sourced materials and processes.

Our gift shops feature numerous products from local vendors that are made from recycled materials, such as: vases and plates made from recycled glass; Christmas ornaments, kitchenware and home decor made from recycled aluminum; and greeting cards, gift bags and napkins made from recycled paper and printed with soy ink, just to name a few. We reuse the packaging material from incoming parcels in the shipping of our gift store items, and donate all excess packaging materials to the local UPS store to be reused in their shipping operations.

Our General Store also offers hundreds of all natural, organic, recycled, and locally sourced food, drink, clothing, personal care, cleaning and, recreation products. We offer all natural and organic food options from well-known and respected brands such as Newman's Own, Amy's, and Kashi. We offer all natural cleaning and personal care products from Dr. Bronner's, Seventh Generation, and Tom's of Maine. We feature beverages from Blue Sky, Santa Cruz, and Knudsen's and offer clothing and recreational products from Econscious, Leave No Trace, and Preserve.


It is the objective of Signal Mountain Lodge to protect all wildlife that reside in Grand Teton National Park and to preserve the Park's native species as much as possible. Each species residing in the park have a particular habitat and lifestyle requirements, and The National Park Service has provided guidelines for the safe viewing and etiquette concerning visitor interaction with wildlife. Handouts are available at Signal Mountain Lodge that outline proper etiquette and information for all animals residing in the park. Additional info may be found on the National Park Service website.

Bear Awareness

While it is important to keep a safe and respectful distance from all animals in the park, black and grizzly bears are a particular concern. Signal Mountain Lodge educates guests and employees on bear awareness and the proper etiquette and safety precautions that need to be considered when staying in or traveling in bear country. All waste is disposed of and/or contained in bear proof cans and dumpsters or storage boxes, and any bear activity within the confines of the Signal Mountain Lodge or Leek's Marina areas is immediately reported to the National Park Service. Employee housing, campgrounds and guest cabin areas are monitored on a daily basis for bear attractants of any kind and specially designed food storage containers or "bear boxes" are provided for every campsite in our campgrounds to ensure that food is properly stored.


Over the course of the past few years Signal Mountain Lodge and Leeks Marinas have been dedicated to replacing all of our older 2-stroke engines with more environmentally responsible technology. We are proud to say that our entire marina rental fleet and all of our work boats now run on either 4-stroke or Evinrude E-Tec engines. These new engines are estimated to reduce air emissions by 75%, burn 35-50% less gasoline, and use up to 50% less oil than their old 2-stroke counterparts. Not only will these new engines reduce emissions, use significantly less oil, but they are more fuel efficient and require less maintenance. They are also much quieter than the previous models thus less disruptive to wildlife and customers providing a more pristine National Park experience. Our new outboard engines are better for Signal Mountain Lodge, our rental customers, and the environment!

Signal Mountain Lodge has also developed a Clean Marina Program, does extensive staff training in spill prevention, countermeasure, and cleanup procedures, and recycles fishing line at both of our marina locations. In addition we have installed triple wall fuel lines, breakaway valves, and numerous shut off locations to provide the best possible spill prevention options for our fuel systems.

Health & Wellness

In partnership with Grand Teton National Park and the National Park Service, Signal Mountain Lodge supports the personal wellness of all our guests and staff by promoting health and well-being in body, mind, spirit, and environment through education, communication, and inspiration. It is our intention to rejuvenate and raise awareness for the role of public lands in improving the health of our nation. National parks are model settings to promote physical activity, healthy eating, and mental health, while also demonstrating how human health is interdependent on the health of all species and our environment.

We encourage all of those staying in Grand Teton National Park to get out and explore all that this amazing park has to offer. We encourage all of our guests to join the "Signal Mountain Summit Club"! By reaching the summit of Signal Mountain by either biking or hiking, guests are rewarded with a sticker to recognize their accomplishment.

Signal Mountain Lodge also offers a number of guided activities such as fly fishing, lake fishing, and rafting on the Snake River for guests to facilitate the many outdoor recreation activities available in the Tetons. Canoe, kayak, and boat rentals are also available at Signal Mountain Marina for the more adventurous outdoor enthusiasts who wish to explore Jackson Lake on their own.

Grand Teton National Park trail maps and information regarding hikes, wildlife viewing, backcountry camping, flora, fauna, geology, boating, and many other activities and areas of interest are provided to our guests. All of this park information is provided free of charge and is intended to inspire and educate our guests on the myriad of activities and natural wonders that Grand Teton National Park has to offer. It is our hope that if guests and visitors are provided with the information, education, and inspiration they will take advantage of the many opportunities available to them to get up, get out, and explore this amazing place.
